What is Rotaract?

Rotaract is a social club for men and women aged 18-30(ish!) who enjoy meeting new people and making new friends in a relaxed fun atmosphere. Rotaract provides an opportunity to take part in various social activities and to help raise money for local charities.

There are about 100 Rotaract Clubs in Great Britain and Ireland, and more than 7,600 in 158 countries around the world. In many of the larger districts, joint events are held with other neighbouring clubs most weekends. This can be a theme disco, a quiz night or a dinner dance. Some national Rotaract events are also organised. There are currently about 3,000 Rotaractors in Great Britain and Ireland, giving you the opportunity to meet lots of new people.

Derby Rotaract Club was chartered in 1977 and is one of three Rotaract Clubs in District 1220; the others being the Rotaract Clubs of Nottingham and Derwent Valley. We are supported by the Rotary Clubs of Derby and Derby South within District 1220.

In 2005 Derby Rotaract received “RGBI Club of the Year” under Past President Kathryn Tyrrell. We achieved this award both for making a positive difference to the community, and to promote the wider picture of Rotaract. You can read a report on our presentation on the RGBI website here.

What is the typical Rotaractor like?

There is no real prerequisite for joining Rotaract. A typical member of Rotaract is between 18-30(ish!), either new to the area or just fancying a chance to widen their social group or something different.

How often do we meet and what do we get up to?

We meet every Wednesday and occasionally at the weekend. We do a variety of activities - see our calendar for recent events and upcoming plans. Some of the things we’ve done in the last couple of years include: cinema, bowling, camping, theatre, day trips out, pub quizzes, wine tasting, DVD nights, games nights, meals out, clubbing, badminton, beer festival, walking, cycling, weekends away, swimming, and regular visits to the pub! In order to plan all this we have a business meeting on the first Wednesday of each month to organise events.

Who decides and organises the events?

We all do, so we get out of it what we put in. The group decides what events we’ll do and we take it in turns to help each other organise them. We hope that all our members want to get involved, from suggesting a pub to help organise charity events. No-one will ever be put on the spot.

When and where do we meet?

We meet on the first Wednesday of each month, at The Rugby Club, Haslam's Lane, Darley Abbey, Derby, DE22 1EB. If you are unable to come to this, see our Events Diary, which is updated shortly after each business meeting and shows what events we have organised for the coming month.

Do I have to drive?

No, our members are spread around the area and are happy to offer lifts.

Does it cost anything?

Membership of Derby Rotaract is £15 a year, payable either in one go or in three instalments of £5. This covers the running of the club in terms of this website and publicity. Obviously all events are on top of this. We don’t ask for subs from new members for the first month as we think of it a “trial period” - we hope you like us enough to stay!

Which Charities do you support?

In 2007/08 we will be raising money for the County Air Ambulance. Please visit their website to find out more about the valuable service that they provide.

Where can I sign up?

Any potential new members can contact either Tom (President) on 07795 321588 or Linda (Secretary) on 07919 505004 or email Derby Rotaract.
